Michael Welsh, the runner of Michael's Blog. Michael Welsh is also known as yomcat, and has a beautiful wifey called Melissa. Michael Welsh will talk about random stuff in Michael's blog. Stuff like advanced mathematics and pretty beads. If it doesn't offend people, it's not worth saying.

50 Questions - the answers

<dc:description>Here you go. All answers are final, and sucks to be you. I'll update the tink rating when I can be bothered. Probably after this Number Theory exam.

1. What is a yomcat? [5]

This question is an open question, with no correct answer.

2. What was the theme for my 17th birthday party? [1]

Bob the Builder. And Melissa is making me/us a nice big Bob the Builder quilt for summer. To replace the duvet I "lost".

3. What game do I play the most? [1]

Angband. Go look at my Wakoopa stats. The neopets is all Melissa (I like to spam stat whoring sites) and I have been playing a lot of fm lately, but it's Angband.

4 -When did I get married? [1]

A gimme. 23rd February, 2008.

5. What was Ben's big lie at my wedding? [2]

"You are now husband and wife". This was my iChat status for a bit.

6. What are the names of all of my inlaws? [4]

Rob, May and Chris. Simon can't spell, the dog doesn't count and Melissa was being a smartarse with middle names. 4 marks was to throw you off.

7. What's wrong if your baby is crying? [2]

Your blender isn't working.

8. Who/what is/was Rick? [2]

My stuffed racoon, that no longer looks like anything about from some faded material that's about to disintegrate.

9. What website do I waste most time on? [1]

Conceptis Puzzles. Though I have to use horrible Firefox and it's currently blocked.

10. What paper did I mark in Semester 1? [1]

MATH 151 Algebra.

11. How many mathematical books do I own? [1]

16, but I think I have some old first year textbooks in a box in my parent's attic. 17 if Uni doesn't want Galois Theory back.

12. How many friends do I have? [1]

4.

13. What was the result in the first world cup match I watched? [2]

The first one I can remember is the 1994 World Cup Final, in which Brazil beat Italy on penalties after a 0-0 draw.

14. What is the best game of football I have ever watched? [2]

Only Ivan got this one. It was the Young Football Ferns vs. Colombia, when they won 3-1.

15. At which park did I score my first goal? [1]

Wilton, in a 4-2 victory in 4th form.

16. What were my two wedding songs? [2]

The Wedding Song by Mumsdollar (which is awesome) and Ring of Fire by Johnny Cash, proceeded by "It's been confirmed that the aliens have landed" from Skillet's Alien Youth.

17. What are all the pieces of software I use to do my assignments? [5]

Blitz, Zombie, Varsis, Strider and Gordon.

22. What distributed computing projects do I participate in? [2]

Einstein @ Home (the "looking for pink stars" one) and PrimeGrid. I also have done some looking for aliums, but that's stupid.

Mountain Dew.

24. How many pick-up lines are in my database? [1]

There were 70 at the time of writing, but you could always check.

25. What online games do I play regularly? [2]

Online Football Manager and Alphabounce.

26. Where do I work? [1]

NumberWorks (Karori and Kilbirnie). I also pretend to work at Uni and at BWA.

27. What is the name of the computer I use at Uni? [2]

It's not Mulgrave, it's Lombard. Mulgrave is the other one. I checked.

28. What do I call Melissa's soft toys? [3]

Eleanor, Latrina (or Fish), Benedict, Meredith.

29. What was the first course I went to all the classes of? [1]

MATH308, in second year.

30. What are the dimensions of my blackboard? [2]

2700 by 1200.

31. What was my first tape? [2]

dc Talk's Supernatural. Until someone spilt juice on it...

32. What room is my office? [2]

CO338, but I like Simon's answer as well - the guy (which should be man) room. In between the thinking room and the sleeping room - which is my office thing at home.

33. Who did I play in my 4th form play? [1]

Adam.

34. What football team(s) do I support? [2]

The Phoenix. I also follow Man United and Barcelona.

35. If I ever ran a quiz night, what would I do to the scores? [1]

TFAE: Use a finite group, mod them out, use Z something.

36. What calculator do I use the most? [1]

Sage. But the one on Steve gets used at Numberworks a bit, and I pulled out my old green one to do some of my Number Theory exam (I know, it's just not right).

37. Who is my favourite Phoenix player? [1]

Siggy.

38. State two of my cooking adventures. [2]

Flaming Mince and Boiled Chicken Nuggets. There are only two.

39. What is my most-used text editor? [2]

TeXShop, which is a text editor. Smultron for "real" text-editors.

40. What's my favourite FPS? [1]

Star Wars Battlefront, though I have been playing Battlefield 1942 a bit recently.

41. How many houses have I lived in? [1]

5 - Haitaitai, Kilbirnie, Karori, the evicted flat, Burning Cocks.

42. What is the most pressed key on my keyboard? [1]

Accoring to Whatpulse, it's the up arrow, with 111940 pokes. Down gets 101890, Shift gets 46398. Think about Angband, basically.

43. What is the most pressed letter key on my keyboard? [2]

d, with 78018. e has 37679, y has 8730. Once again, think about Angband. It does make sense.

44. Why did I refuse to go to my graduation ceremony? [2]

Because Melissa's was so utterly boring.

#orangeslice

46. How many applications do I basically never quit? [1]

5 (or 6). I'm only counting ones that appear in my command tab. Other ones aren't real applications.

47. What are they? [5]

Mail, iChat, X-Chat Aqua, Syrinx and iTunes. Finder as well, but that doesn't really count.

48. What was my favourite formal dinner? [2]

Sarah FD's 21th. With pizza and icecream. It was also my first formal dinner. For what the "geek" tie was born.

49. What papers have I failed at Uni? [3]

The stupid fishies one, MATH 309, MATH 223.

50. Describe me in exactly 6 words [6]

Open to Interpretation. Like question 1. I just needed 6 more marks to make 100.

<dc:description>Melissa has a game. With interesting questions.
Example:

You are in a concrete room. There is a steel pipe 25 centimetres in length cemented into the centre of the concrete floor. The pipe protrudes about 15 centrimetres. A ping-pong ball is dropped down the pipe. There is a fraction of a centimetre clearance around the ping-pong ball and the pipe. Your task is to get the ping-pong ball out of the steel pipe undamaged. The only items that are available are a wooden ruler, a ball of string, a pocket mirror, a paper clip and a small magnet. Since nothing else is allowed into the room, how could you get the plastic ping-pong ball out of the pipe?

200 tink rating increase for the first correct answer. And a thorough explanation. Bonuses will be awarded at my discretion.
</dc:description>

Numbering Systems

<dc:description>I want your ideas for numbering systems. Every one that is submitted earns a tink rating of 500 (I like big numbers now).
Surprisingly, there are some guidelines that need to be followed:

The system doesn't actually need to be a system

It needs to contain at least 20 "numbers"

They can't be overly long

They can't be boring (so no "positive integers")

If they are generated by a rule, I want to know the rule

I think that's all. Have fun ;)
</dc:description>

Birthday. Soon.

<dc:description>So my birthday is soon. I think that countdown may be a little off because of server timezones issues. But it's still close.
So, apart from a Moped concert (the last ever NZ one by that band), I think I might take my woman out to dinner. She deserves it. Putting up with me basically a year (yes, already!) by that time. I love you Melissa (-:
I guess people want a wish list. Here you go:

Book Vouchers - for Manna. Nowhere else!

A new iPod Video (my one needs replacing)

A NIV study bible

A pocketknife. Something like the Swisschamp XLT (I'll give you a 105 tink rating multiplier if you get this)

Chocolate (to appease Melissa)

A new mouse for my computer. Preferably something like my Parent's Mouse (I can't find it on the net, dunno if it's still sold)

A new keyboard to replace my clunky piece of crap

A set of self-washing clothes

More chocolate (see above)

If there's anything else, I'll remember it later. Much later. And not blog it.
</dc:description>
