So, tonight at CU (which was much better than last week, by the way) we were discussing the fact that every subject is really just applied maths. (More)13 Mar, 2010
On Wednesday, I am giving a talk, nominally about what I got up to all summer. This talk is currently unnamed, but it could do with a name. Vote. (More)17 Feb, 2010
As part of my research, I have needed to understand the quadrangle criterion, in relation to quasigroup multiplication tables and latin squares. I have a proof of this, that should be understandable to persons with a level of mathematical understanding somewhere around the kindergarten level. Unfortunately, I was unable to use pi as a variable. Maybe next time.27 Dec, 2009
Last one. In other news, Remnant Books and Cards is over, and I'm getting tired of certain parts of the Internet, and most likely will take a break. (More)14 Dec, 2009
Read down the list until you get to something that makes sense. (More)23 Nov, 2009
All of these words exist. And there are more, my dictionary gave up. (More)16 Oct, 2009
I gave yet another talk today. This time, it was on The Tutte Polynomial and Linear Codes. Once again, there are lots of errors and stuff in those notes. But there is a varpi, which is cool.07 Oct, 2009
Today, I gave a talk. My notes, which (I think) are rather readable, are available here. (More)16 Jul, 2009
Biologists think they are biochemists,Biochemists think they are Physical Chemists,
Physical Chemists think they are Physicists,
Physicists think they are Gods,
And God thinks he is a Mathematician. (More)

I have a proof of the Goldbach Conjecture, but it is too long to fit into this blog post.13 May, 2009
So, last time, I told you all about the necklaces I made with 8 beads. (More)04 May, 2009
So, I've been making necklaces (without clasp) and counting how many different ones I can make. I have to use 7 beads, and they can be any of eight different colours. And I have a crapload of beads. (More)10 Apr, 2009
My current captcha is kinda broken. I had an idea to make some mathy ones awhile back, and I found something that could help. (More)10 Apr, 2009
2 weeks of doing absolutely nothing. Except Counting and General Abstract Nonsense. (More)04 Apr, 2009
Yes, there are more. Always more. I've just removed my latest change. If you didn't see it, too bad. I might put it back in sometime later. (More)19 Mar, 2009
Do first years know anything? Last week it was basic integers, this time around it's Proof by example. (More)19 Mar, 2009
Galois Theory (which is really only one theorem) is going to be finished soon (I think we're more than halfway through the book). Since sitting around twiddling thumbs is not what you do in a postgrad mathematics course, we'll be moving onto... (More)15 Mar, 2009
Is it acceptable to write "please use a calculator" as a comment? (More)07 Mar, 2009
In my (rather extended) third year, I was introduced to the field axioms far too many times. So far, one week into honours, I've been introduced to Boolean Algebras 3 times. By the same lecturer. In every class except Algebra...04 Mar, 2009
Transcendental meditation is meditation that isn't algebraic. Or a new form of dentistry being practised in Gore. (More)02 Mar, 2009
Today is my first day as a graduate student. Apparently I'm a nice person (through statistical inference or proof by example). I don't know if I can get Steve onto the network yet (SCS is sucky) but I should be able to. (More)18 Aug, 2008

Modulo arithmetic is just so easy. No annoying fractions or decimals. Instead, there are residue classes and partitions of the integers. Makes matrix reduction so much easier. And more useful. (More)25 Jul, 2008
Well, I think the old Authimage is getting just that, old. And after seeing what Simon has on his blog, I'm looking into changing what I use. (More)15 Jul, 2008
DISCLAIMER: ADVANCED MATHEMATICS (GET USED TO IT)Had this in class today. I know the answer, and can kinda grasp why it is the answer, but it's still a little odd. (More)

Well, this is called I dunno because I dunno what to call it. That's a good enough reason for me. After all, it is (just like worship) all about me. (More)12 Jun, 2008

So Soul Purpose showed up today. Apart from the constant plugs to text "SOUL" to 883 - DO IT!, there was this question thing. It's horrible. (More)26 Oct, 2005
More random facts. This time I have a topic (-: (More)22 Apr, 2005
Following on from the success of the last two attempts at this, I was sure I had it down pat.I was wrong. Actually, it turns out that girls are Absolute Evil. How, still confuses me (I need to sleep, it's right on my bedtime now), but I'm sure I'll figure it out when I finally get round to sitting down and figuring it out. It makes sense, just explaining it is harder. If you can figure it out, kudos. You're most probably less tired and have more spare time than me, to which I congratulate you. (More)

I need to create a new Maths category. I shall, after this is completed.Anyway, on with the proof. This one was given to us in a lecture today. Dave, keep quiet about it. ;) (More)

Thanks to Dave for pointing this out to me. It's awesome, proving one of the most beautiful things I know of. (More)25 Feb, 2005
It was wrong. Yup, me, studying for a Maths major, got some basic maths wrong. Thats bad. It's not a minor error either (well, it is in terms of the Maths, but not overall). The error isn't actually in there, but its noticable now that I know what it is. (x>0 showed it to me in a lecture today). ARGH!!!!!!Well, the error is around the end. I'll explain more in that "(more)" link. But first, check out the original. (More)

I got this in an email, and thought it was cool, so I'll blog it (slightly modified, in terms of grammar and spelling). There were some mathematical problems, which I have fixed.First one must assume that girls are time and money, Therefore,
Girls = Time x Money (More)
ABOUT ME
I'm Michael Welsh (or yomcat), a 23 year old something from Wellington, New Zealand. I was married on the 23rd of February 2008 to Melissa. I enjoy discrete mathematics mainly, and have a BSc (Hons) in Mathematics. I have an iMac, called Gordon (named after my grandfather), and my "something small for Uni", known as Zepto. Oh, and Steve. Currently, I am doing my Masters, in the area of Matroids. I have a rather large (entire wall) blackboard in my room (3.24m2), and a little (A4) one that lives in my bag. I like long walks in the forest, playing computer games and stat whoring.
