Day 34 - Flight

7 June 2014, 04:37

Canon EOS 70D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens @ 200mm, 1/320 second @ f/2.8, ISO 100.

The settings were wrong (I was photographing a shag eating its young) and the lens was far too short (200, when I should have used a 500+), and focus missed a bit, but I finally managed to track a moving bird across the sky. All the photos are rubbish, but I (and my camera) can do the technical bit. I have some other shots of a shag flying, but I don’t quite like them as much as these ones of a kaka, probably because I was closer and expecting it a little more, so have higher standards.

Now to return with a long lens (I’m tossing up between the 400 f/5.6 and 300 f/4 IS, and I’ll probably get extenders) and try to get better shots. Probably not for ages, as I’m quite certain the next lens I buy is going to be a 100mm one.

Yeah, I quite like Zealandia. It is what got me into “serious” photography in the first place…
