Day 25 - On the Prowl

28 May 2014, 03:14

Canon EOS 70D, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens @ 200mm, 1/200 second @ f/8, ISO 320.

I didn’t shoot wide open. Crazy, I know.

I tried changing the cat’s eyes to make them more evil, but couldn’t do it easily without modifying the entire image, so I gave up (after about 5 minutes). So this shot is yet another one that’s straight out of the camera (modulo cropping, because duh).

This highlights that I need to learn more about post-processing. At the moment, I basically crop and apply some presets. I might clone out some things if asked (*cough*Melissa*cough*), but that’s about it. I have no desire to learn new software just yet, just learn more about the two pieces that I currently use – Aperture and something that a right-click in Aperture opens.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, I’m not a “in camera or else” kind of photographer. I can apply effects and do horrible things like HDR in-camera, but why should I? There are also physical hacks (ref: Day 23) that can be used instead of post-processing. I shoot RAW for many reasons, one of which is the extra potential for post-processing. I think my stance is “why use physical hacks when post-processing is easier, cheaper, and better?”

It’s digital photography. The “digital” bit is not vacuous.

So, I’m going to do one day a week (haven’t decided which day yet) where I get an old photo and try out some post-production techniques on it. See how it goes.
