Leaving The Cave

I really can’t take a good photo with my iPhone. That’s (almost) all the photography gear I could potentially use. With some $GF(4)$ matrix operations in the background.

Anyway, the gear (from left to right). Names are taken from the EXIF data:
Cameras: Canon EOS 1100D, Canon EOS 70D
Lenses: Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 [II], Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6, Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6, Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II, Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 III, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II.

So, yesterday, I submitted my thesis for examination. This means that I am no longer in a thesis cave, which is both a good and a bad thing. I now have to resort to the “I don’t want” excuse for events rather than the always accepted “thesis, piss off”.

Some things that occurred while I was in my thesis cave:

  1. I was asked about grandchildren. By someone who would not be the grandfather.
  2. I hired some L lenses and went to a wedding. I don’t like weddings. I do like L lenses.
  3. Reaper of Souls and Chasing Shadows were released.
  4. I supported a bunch of kickstarters.
  5. Lots and lots and lots of LaTeX
  6. One brother moved to Auckland to study biology at Polytech, the other moved to Canberra. The Auckland one has a substantially better deal.
  7. I got roped in to doing a talk – 20th May, CO 350, 1310. I might advertise it here.
  8. I used the word ‘quadrate’ in my thesis. Correctly. And them promptly forgot what it means.
  9. Melissa is now an economist. And in a couple of years we’ll be doctor buddies.
  10. Melissa broke the car.

However, I can do stuff that isn’t mathematics now. For instance, pretend to look for work. And take photos again. I did also purchase that big white L lens yesterday (it comes with an instruction manual). I’m intending to take photos every day, and post at least one here daily. I know I’m not going to be successful in this daily endeavour, because international travel, but I’ll do my best.

I’ve been watching lots of YouTube whilst eating my lunch, and have a bunch of photography things I want to try out. Some of the ideas involve fire. A few don’t. But I’m basically open to try anything (except HDR, because eww). So if you want a bitching Facebook photo or want me to shoot something, contact me. I’m not charging anything (yet, potentially forever), though I’ll probably only release photos under a restrictive CC license. I’m also never planning on going pro, because the “not-taking-photos” bit of that sucks.

I’ll also be looking for models for various things, probably.

  1. Whose grandchildren? And does the shooting offer only apply to photography?

  2. A friend of the Dabbs asked us when the grandkids are going to appear. And I could shoot you with other things. What do you have in mind?

  3. Their grandchildren, or your grandchildren?

I do not especially want you to shoot me, but maybe you could shoot Tim with a water pistol or Nerf gun?

  4. Well, they can’t be my grandchildren. I need to have children first.

Maybe I shall, next time I randomly walk past him whilst carrying a water pistol.
